DISCOVER ATHENS: Public Transportation Guide
Airport to the City Centre Guide
Upon your arrival in Athens, proceed through airport control and retrieve your checked luggage if applicable. Exit the arrivals area and keep an eye out for signs directing you to taxis, buses, and trains. To reach the metro station, follow the sign indicating trains, which will require a short walk of a few hundred meters. Cross the street outside the airport building, where you'll find stairs and escalators leading upwards. Make sure to take the escalators that lead to the trains, not the airport departure area. If you accidentally end up at the departure area, return downstairs and find the correct escalator leading to the trains. Once you've ascended, walk across a glass-covered bridge to reach the Athens airport metro station, which also serves as the departure point for the suburban railway operated by the national train company. The metro and suburban railway initially follow the same route before diverging. For most visitors aiming to reach central Athens, which includes popular locations like Acropolis, Syntagma, and Monastiraki metro stations, this is the preferred option.
Choosing the best mode of transportation from Athens airport depends on personal factors such as budget, the number of individuals traveling with you, and personal preferences. If you have a considerable amount of luggage and prefer convenience, a taxi to central Athens is a suitable choice. At the time of writing, taxi fares from the airport to central Athens cost €50 euros during the day and €65 from midnight to 5 am.
On the other hand, if you are on a tight budget or arriving during the night, the 24-hour bus X95 to Syntagma square is an option worth considering. This bus route is enjoyable as it provides a first glimpse of the city, allowing you to take in the surroundings through the windows. Similarly, the 24-hour X96 bus to Piraeus port is available for those who are budget-conscious, have extra time, or simply wish to enjoy the journey. The bus fare for a one-way trip on the airport buses is only 5.50 euros per person, and the ticket remains valid for 90 minutes. This option offers the most affordable means of reaching the airport in Athens.
In summary, the choice of transportation from Athens airport depends on factors such as your budget, the number of people traveling with you, and personal preferences. Taxis are convenient for those with heavy luggage, while buses provide a more budget-friendly option with the opportunity to take in the sights during the journey.

Another way to get around Athens is a taxi / radio taxi or pre-booked transfer. There are hundreds of taxis roaming the streets of Athens, and you will recognize them by their bright yellow colour. Most of the transportation apps are available in Greece as well, and as the prices are regulated there should not be any big differences.
